The Brain-Computer Metaverse Digital Integration Laboratory will be established in Hengqin jointly by the Guangdong Institute of Intelligence Science and Technology (GDIIST) and Macau IT company Boardware Information System Limited, marking the first cooperation in the field of information technology involving a scientific research centre based in the neighbouring In-depth Cooperation Zone and a leading technology enterprise in Macau.
The metaverse can be defined as a simulated digital environment that uses augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and blockchain, along with concepts from social media.
The lab will aim to solve the problems in the application of electroencephalography (EEG) signals visual image reconstruction and recognition, evoking EEG recognition under weak visual stimuli, and 3D scene reconstruction based on deep neural network and multimodal technology, to create a metaverse immersion scene based on brain-computer interaction.
At the cooperation agreement signing ceremony, deputy director of the Executive Committee of the Guangdong-Macau In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin, Fu Yongge, expressed that the collaboration between GDIIST and Boardware Information System Limited is an “important historical moment” that marks the first cooperation in the field of information technology between a scientific research centre rooted in the cooperation zone and a leading technology enterprise in Macau.
The chairman of the IT company, Ng Ga Jeun, indicated that research with the institute has enabled the use of the human brain to control drones and the use of human mind and pupil membrane to accomplish human activities in the metaverse.
Future research directions will include some technical difficulties, such as adapting the human eye to VR glasses to help people work and live in the metaverse world more conveniently and comfortably, the Ng Ga Jeunsaid.
Last month, Hengqin authorities released 30 measures to further stabilise the economy, with one measure stating that the cooperation zone will establish the first open Metaverse innovation pilot zone in China, and develop new Internet industries such as Metaverse by launching support policies.
Earlier in July, Hengqin authorities also announced plans to develop a ‘Metaverse Super Testing Ground’ together with Chimelong Group Co., Ltd, the group responsible for the Chimelong Ocean Kingdom in Hengqin, with the construction of a 3,000-square-meter technology exhibition hall.
